The championship continues on Saturday and Sunday at the same venue. The only women’s contest of the day, in the bantamweight class, saw Sathya make good use of her greater height and reach to stop Sophia, a Manipuri girl from East Wood High School, on points. Out of eight bouts in the senior section four received walkovers while the other four ended in TKOs. Prabhakar’s SAK coach threw in the towel in the second round to hand Bhaskar a technical knock-out while Srinivas was stopped from pounding Dhandeshwaran by the referee in the first round. In the junior section, five out of seven fights were decided on points. The bout of the day in this section was between John Paul of SAI and Manjunath of the Regional Coaching Centre where they slugged it out and both drew blood with John finally emerging winner of points. In the sub-junior section, six out of Friday’s seven bouts were decided by points while referee Sudha Manoharan stopped the seventh in the seventh round in favour of Jai Prakash of East Wood High School after giving Santosh of SSB English High School two standing counts of eight. The opening day of the 4th State Sub-Junior, Junior, Senior and Women’s Boxing Championship began and ended with a flurry of punches as opponents stood toe-to-toe and tried to smash each other to smithereens at MEG’s Training Battalion III indoor ring on Friday. The juniors (under 17) and the seniors showed some finesse, skill and, of course, plenty of spirit. For them boxing is all about raw courage and guts.
